 A classic theater-creche edition You can imagine my excitement when, on a trip to Brussels, I stumbled upon the Theater_Krippe in a bookshop off the Grande Place. This was the first commrcial model I built since my childhood, when first paper creche beckoned, in another bookstore window, in Pyrgos, Greece. While this creche does not fold up — it's constructed as a solid-base theater — do I need to say how fond I am of this little treasure? Theater-Krippe is fine example of the paper-maker's art: exquisite construction; alluring design (just click on the angel band beneath the creche photo to admire for yourself, full-size); and high-quality printing on light paper stock. The figures are exotic, especially the phantasmagorical magi. Two putty flutter above, and shepherds are kneeling reverently or jumping in exultation. The Holy Family, which forms the back panel, is surrounded by more figures in adoration And the absence of side panels, a fact that goes unoticed by the viewer because of the proscenium (unless, of course, your looking from the sides) allows lots of available light to bathe every square inch and centimenter of this classic J.F. Schreiber reprint of a Hubert Siegmund design. And, while I'm singing its praises, may I suggest placing panel No. 5 in front of No. 4 makes more visual sense?
