From manger scene to fold-out creche
The Manger Scene by Corinne Bill Bailey (above left), is a marvelous 1933 punch-out edition by the Sallfield Publishing Company. The Manger Scene was intended to be displayed as shown at right, above, by Creche Guild Member Karen Kasbooth. But however lovely its figures, its paper is is of a light-weight, and the individual pieces tend to sag (see roof, above right) and curl.
Creating a fold-out model from a manger scene classic

One beaufiful booklet, so many possibilities—
One look at this beautiful punch-out creche will tell you that everything you'll need to create a fold-out creche is right here, courtesy of the gifted hand of artist Corinne bill Bailey. Her vivid watercolors draws the eye and holds it in a spell even as it attempts to take in the next breath-taking colorful figure or background painting.

But as Karen Kasbooth relates, nativiity scenes made of separate pieces do have trouble standing upright. And, if the paper they're printed on is not heavy stock, they have a tendency to curl and bend out of shape.

As soon as I found this treasure I knew I couldn't bring myself to punch it out and set it up: it was just too wonderfully precious to take apart. And I could see, given the weight of the paper and the rather large sixe of the individual figures (one of the Magi measures 9.5 x 5.5 inches) there would be problems with distortion of the pieces.

The solution was to create a new fold-out creche that would eliminate so of the problems associated with nativity scenes.
