The Christmas Créche
A 3-dimensional Picture Book
Designed by Paul Wagner, 1888

Is there another word to discribe these compact books other than magical? They open up to reveal a 3-dimensional panorama of the Nativity.

This quality reprint of the J.F. Schreiber 1988 original presents a triptych-like Nativity. The left panel unfolds to reveal wooly sheep and lambs, a camel driver and his beastie, a double-arch wall with a cow and manger beyond, and the star that guided the magi.

The center panel recreates a beautiful tableau of the Nativity: In the background the Virgin and Child are being adored by the shepherds, while in successive layers to the front a magi stands by an archway; the two other magi kneel in front of the Christ Child; a mother and her daughter offer two doves; while a ladden donkey and a curly-horned ram await patiently.

The right panel depicts an angel framed by another archway and standing on beautifully formed steps. To his right another camel driver surveys the scene from perched high above his Ship of the Desert. And in the foreground and background greenery and palms bloom.

Designer Paul Wagner's endearing images bring to life the familiar story in colorful images that look as fresh and appealing today as they did over a century ago.
