The King in Search of Adventure
Designed by Marie Hjuler, 1927
These over-size (18" x 23"), colorful sheets are sure to make the heart of a true toy theater lover skip a beat or two.
Intended two be glued on heavier stock, then cut-out and assembled, these fine reproductions by Denmark's Ballermann & Søn of the 1927 original could easily find their way into your wall: Marie Hjuler's watercolor backdrop of an expansive sky, silvery sea, and green fields would look at home framed as well as behind the stage.
In front of the stage, of course, stand His Majesty, his companion Jørge Ulne, and a cadre of uniformed, helmeted guards. Especially beguiling are two children, Per and Bodil, dressed up in their Sunday folk costume best.
These colorful characters parade against a muted architecturea grand archway, a palace courtyard with a fountain. And, for a change of scene, there's a forest with a quaint cottage hidden amongst the greenery.
Five drawings clearly illustrate how to put it all togethereven if you don't read Danish. What else can you ask for? Oh, maybe a photo of the artistI'd love to see the face of woman who gave us this little treasure.
